AfriTrade Consulting Group, in collaboration with Adelphi, is currently engaged in a consultancy with GIZ to evaluate the transformative potential of green hydrogen to advance Kenya’s industrialization agenda and facilitate a just, low-carbon economic transition. This forward-looking assignment examines how green hydrogen can serve as a clean energy vector and feedstock across priority industrial sectors, including chemicals (for ammonia and fertilizers), steel production (through direct reduction processes), and cement manufacturing (via alternative fuels and carbon capture integration).

Through comprehensive techno-economic assessments, we are analyzing production feasibility using Kenya’s abundant renewable energy resources; cost trajectories across various scenarios; infrastructure requirements, including electrolysis capacity, storage, and dedicated transport networks; and international trade opportunities in emerging global green hydrogen markets. The study aligns with Kenya’s national climate commitments, the Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, and broader strategies for sustainable industrial growth, including Vision 2030 and the emerging Green Economy Strategy.

The consultancy encompasses developing a robust, evidence-based baseline study, a targeted policy brief for the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry, and a pragmatic action plan outlining phased integration pathways across short-, medium-, and long-term horizons. These outputs include stakeholder-validated recommendations on regulatory frameworks, investment incentives, skills development, public-private partnership models, and international cooperation mechanisms to accelerate adoption.

By addressing barriers such as technology maturity, financing gaps, and supply chain development, we will provide actionable insights to position Kenya as a competitive player in the global green hydrogen economy. This engagement reinforces our work in green industrial policy formulation, climate-aligned economic planning, and strategic advisory services for sustainable industrialization, solidifying our role as a key partner in Kenya’s transition toward resilient, low-carbon manufacturing and export-oriented growth.
